Chapter 11 ~ Sophia

I’d bought two tests: one to take when I arrived home and one to take when I woke up in case the first one was wrong.

My hands shook as I stepped into the bathroom with the box in my grasp. What was I going to do if I was pregnant? I could think on one hand the number of times I’d thought about having a child: once. It had been the only other time I’d ever had a scare like this.

Luckily, that one had worked out, and it had been a false alarm. I hoped that this one was, too. I wasn’t at a place in life to deal with a child. I had bills that needed to be cleared out, and a house that needed fixing. It would also help if I had a man around who loved me and the child.

I stared at the box. If this came back positive, what the hell was Scott going to say? What would he do?

With shaky fingers, I tore open the box and removed one of the two tests. It was hard enough to pee on a quarter-inch stick you shoved between your legs and couldn’t see, but add in shaking hands and forget it. I hoped I had enough urine on the test strip to work.

I put the protective cap back on, set it on the sink face down, and washed my hands. I glanced in the mirror and remembered I still had on my stage makeup. Man, no wonder the cashier had rolled her eyes when I’d paid for the test. She probably thought I was a hooker with my dark eye makeup and sparkles.

I grabbed a washcloth and scrubbed my face, putting on moisturizer when I was done. I knew the allotted time for the test was over, but instead of flipping it to see the result, I sank onto the side of the tub and stared at it as if I were facing a rattlesnake about to strike.

I knew what it was going to say. I felt it in my bones. The last time I’d had a scare, my period had been late, but I hadn’t had any other signs. This time, not only was I two weeks late, but my breasts hurt, I was exhausted, and I was getting morning sickness at all times of the day—not to mention that I had burst into tears yesterday and I couldn’t remember the last time I’d cried.

In fact, as I stared at the stupid plastic test, my eyes welled with unshed tears. I snagged the test quickly just to get it over with. I already knew the answer. A wave of nausea slammed into me, and I threw myself at the toilet just in time. The test skittered along the floor as I let go of it and grabbed the sides of the bowl. I emptied everything from my stomach into the toilet and then leaned back against the dingy white cabinet behind me. The
